Abstract

The shoot of Thyrsostachys siamensis Gamble is usually damaged by bamboo shoot borer, bamboo aphid and dried out disease. This experiment was carried out to test that thinning would effect the incidence of pests and diseases. This research was done in 6 years old plantation, located in Thong Pha Poom district, Kanchanaburi province. Four levels of thinning were used as 0%, 25%,50% and 75% of the total number of culms within each clump. The result is non significance among treatment on shoot production and the damaged by shoot borer. However, thinning at 75% significantly showed high level of dried out disease.

Abstract

Density and spatial distribution pattern of oviposition markings of Yangna stem borer, Celosterna pollinosa sulphurea Heller were investigated in pure and mixed stands of Dipterocarpus alatus Roxb. and Anisoptera costata Korth. in the Huai Tha Experimental Station, Srisaket province in 1995. The density of oviposition markings was highest in the pure stands of A. costata. The densities in the pure stands planted 4x4 m were 5 to 10 times higher than those in the mixed one planted in 8x8 m. The spatial distribution patterns of oviposition markings were contagious in the pure stands, while they were random in the mixed. In the multistorey mixed stands, the densities were 5-8 times higher in the thinning plots than in the non-thinning plot.

Abstract

Insect pests are major problems that hinder the growth and the development of the Indian Mahogany. Selecting for resistant species is one way to tackle the problems. Survey of damages caused by the shoot borer, Hypsipyla robusta Moore, and the root collar borer, Pagiophloeus longiclavis Marshall, was done in Toona ciliata M. J. Roem, Toona sureni (Blume) Merrill, Cedrela odorata L. and Cedrela augustifolia Sesse & Moc. It was found that H. robusta caused higher damage to T. ciliata than C. odorata On the other hand P. longiclavis showed more infestation on C. odorata than 5? ciliata. Damages from both insects in T. sureni and C. augustifolia were recorded but have not yet compared to other species due to t,he low survival percentage of the seedling resulted in small number of trees remaining.
